Balwadis are centers of pre-school learning that encourage 4-6 year old economically underprivileged children to enroll in schools. A typical Balwadi runs for 2 hours a day in the house of an Akshara volunteer who acts as a teacher. |

The Accelerated Learning Programmes aims to improve children’s reading and math abilities through 45-day learning modules that use innovative methods to enhance learning. |
| Library Programme |
Akshara has pioneered children’s libraries in Karnataka and has been active in many parts of the state. |
| Catalytic Programme in North Karnataka |
Akshara is working in 20 of the most educationally backward districts of Karnataka with the entire range of programmes, both in the community and in the schools. |
